4. Perspective - Viewpoint page 1 of 2
The viewpoint, is where our eyeline is in relation to the objects we see.
To make it easier, think of objects contained in an invisible box or in this
case I'm using a gift box!
In Fig. A. The box in the middle is seen from straight on directly in front of our
eyeline and so has a MIDDLE viewpoint. Because of this we cannot see the top
or bottom of the box.
The box at the top looks like our eyeline is below the box looking up. Now we
can see the base of the box too. This is a LOW viewpoint.
The box at the bottom has our eyeline above the box looking down on it. Now
we see the top of the box. This is a HIGH viewpoint. Notice that both the base
and top of the boxes seems to get smaller the further away from our eyes it is!
In Fig. B. we are looking at the box turned slightly around so that one edge is
facing towards us. Again see how depending on our viewpoint the box appears
to be seen from above or below. We usually see this kind of perspective when
taking pictures of buildings.
